Sawerly, an online platform which brings together talented photographers under one roof announced that it received a seed fund back in December 2014 for 800,000 SAR , or around 211,000 USD by QB Co, an angel investor part of Oqal Angel Investment network. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise given Sawerly’s many successes in startup competitions this past year – which are common attraction points for investors.
They started as an idea at Startup Weekend Jeddah 2013, that later got accelerated by Flat6Labs Jeddah (Qotuf al Riyadah), and proceeded to win the MENA-wide Ideathon Competition by Arabnet Riyadh 2013, the National Championship “Get in the Ring” international competition hosted by STC, and later 1st place in the Start-up demo Competition in Riyadh 2014.
Sawerly will now be looking to spend the investment to fully redevelop and redesign the website and app for improved user experience. Hussein Attar, CEO of Sawerly told ArabNet “the current product is only a minimal viable product used to prove the concept; we plan to have the full launch around summer time.” They will very likely look to tap into new markets within the next couple of years, namely in the UAE and Egypt.
While Sawerly services include booking a photographer for a session on an individual scale, they also offer a corporate channel; where companies can deal with Sawerly directly by mediating the services of some of the most talented photographers in the business, and acting as a convenient intermediary that takes care of the headaches of choosing and booking.
They will be adding a new feature called “photo stock”, which will allow photographers to sell their photos on the website – and a premium program that lets photographers host their own subdomains on Sawerly, as well as a larger portfolio capacity, and the ability to be directly booked instead of going through bidding.
Sawerly have been all over the startup competition scene, and their journey has only begun. We’ll be expecting to hear bigger news from this team of talented and dedicated entrepreneurs in the future.
Hussein Attar, CEO of Sawerly, Hussein Attar, was recently chosen by Forbes Middle East as one of Top 100 Entrepreneurs Shaping Saudi Arabia’s Future, Entrepreneurial Elite in technology for his work in Sawerly.

As a continuation of its mandate to support SMEs and entrepreneurs in the Middle East region, one of ArabNet’s biggest annual events is coming to Saudi Arabia on December 14-16, 2016. After the GCC-centric ArabNet conference held in Dubai, UAE, and the Levant-dedicated event held in Beirut, Lebanon earlier this year, ArabNet Riyadh 2015 will welcome 80 speakers and 40 exhibitors from the region and around the world that cater specifically to the KSA digital business, technology and entrepreneurship sectors. With over 30 key talks and sessions from industry leaders, it will also include four competitions, workshops for developers and entrepreneurs to enhance their skills, and a TechFair for B2B displays and meetings.
ArabNet CEO and founder, Omar Christidis, with a diverse background in everything from web development to e-commerce and digital trend analysis, asserts that along with other pressing entrepreneurial issues to be discussed during the ArabNet Riyadh, it also aims to tackle a key KSA challenge: accessing clients and decision makers. According to Christidis, the ArabNet team have developed two main initiatives to support entrepreneurs to take their businesses further: first, aptly titled The MatchUp, wherein ArabNet’s Startup Demo finalists and runners-up engage with business executives as potential partners, as well as connecting ArabNet’s Ideathon finalists and runners-up with investors and accelerators to explore opportunities for seed funding, acceleration or other growth possibilities. Next is the Women Mentoring Women initiative, which will allow female attendees to gain career insights from regional and international women leaders.
This year’s attendees of ArabNet Riyadh can expect to see a number of prominent guest speakers: there’s Ben Maher, Executive Director of Advertising EMEA at Mashable; Benjamin Ampen, Head of Revenue MENA at Twitter; Alex Morriss, Director of Affiliate Partnerships EMAF at Expedia; Dominique Corradi, MENA Digital FS Leader Middle East at Ernst & Young; and Mike Reiner, Business Development Venture Capital EMEA at Amazon Web Services and CCC Startups Partner. On the ministerial opening panel, guests include HRH Prince Dr. Turki Bin Saud Al Saud, President of KACST, HE Dr. Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al-Suwaiyel, Minister of Communication and Information Technology, as well as HE Dr. Mufrej bin Saad Al-Haqbani, Minister of Labor.
If you really want to be part of the ecosystem, you can’t notsupport other entities. What’s ArabNet’s take on this?
The mission of ArabNet is to grow the digital industry by connecting digital executives with business across the region and beyond, while fostering the ecosystem of entrepreneurship in the Arab world. That is a task bigger than one entity’s reach, hence the need for us to work together in order to change the way people think and approach digital. The market is big, and we are always ready and willing to collaborate with any entity that aligns with our vision and objectives, [and] these also include media institutions.
How do you feel the KSA entrepreneurial ecosystem has changed since you first started having a dedicated Saudi Arabian edition of ArabNet?
As ArabNet, we have been in the middle of a very notable and encouraging growth in the Saudi ecosystem. The growth is visible through a proliferation in funding and support organizations such as Endeavor Saudi Arabia, CellA+, OQAL, Qotuf, Young Arab Leaders (YAL) and others. STC has recently launched InspireU, which took part in previous ArabNet conferences across the region. It’s an incubator/accelerator for startups, focused on digital/ICT innovation in Saudi Arabia.
STC Ventures, whose anchor investor is the Saudi Telecom Company, empowers entrepreneurs to create market leading technology businesses. Mobily Ventures on the other hand, based in Riyadh, invests in early and growth stage companies across information and communication technology. Flat6Labs is a regional startup accelerator program that invests in bright, cutting-edge ideas. AccMakk is a Saudi startup accelerator run by Osama Natto and Hashem Nabulsi and supported by UQU (Um al Qurra University). They have graduated over five batches so far and take startups broadly across KSA.
[dt_quote type=”blockquote” font_size=”big” animation=”none” background=”plain”]We can see an emergence of Saudi success stories such as UTURN, a Jeddah-based production company revolutionizing Saudi Arabian news and entertainment, with shows that have been watched over 286 million times on YouTube. Another success story is Sawerly’s rise to fame, after winning second place at the ArabNet Ideathon competition during ArabNet Riyadh 2013, then first place at the startup competition the following year. Sawerly announced reception of +210K in seed fund early this year.
[/dt_quote]Moments that last forever…
What’s the first thing you think about when you read this title? What allows you to keep certain moments of your life forever? Pictures, definitely!
A picture speaks a thousand words. Based on that, Sawerly started the one-thousand-mile journey.
Hussein Attar, Mohammad Al Zahrani, Bassam Seif and Bayan Farhan chose this idea above all others after noticing that the market lacks such services and to broaden the horizon for aspiring, skilled photographers who are yet to be discovered. They have chosen this idea out of the faith they had in its success; for people are always trying to keep their happy memories and their most important life events. Pictures are the best guarantee for that.
The journey started at ArabNet’s Ideathon competition in Saudi Arabia. The entrepreneurship competition followed strict criteria, namely intellectual excellence. This very criteria was the reason behind the success of Sawerly in reaching the finals as well as access to the Flat6Labs programs, which invests in outstanding entrepreneurs, providing them with initial finances, offices, workshops and educational programs.
The company was launched in 2013 by a high spirited, young and skilled team. The most important goal for the Sawerly team is proving that photography belongs in the family of real arts, and giving it the appreciation it deserves by creating an Arab platform that serves as a bridge between young talents and potential clients that need high quality photography services at reasonable prices, alongside giving, both the client and the photographer, an ideal experience.
This platform showcases the photographers work and talent, allowing the client to choose the ideal photographer for his/her project. Sawerly incorporates photographers of all levels, professional, novice and amateur. They even have fully equipped photography studios ready to serve clients in all occasions such as weddings, conferences and celebrations, regardless whether photography subjects are products, people or otherwise. Initially, Sawerly will allow all photographers to create their own profiles, while the company will check each photographer’s skills and work, as well as their degrees. These services are available for individuals and companies alike. Photographers are evaluated by clients based on quality, presence, delivery, among other factors.
What steps should the client take?
All a client has to do is register with the website and send photography requests. Photographers would compete to win the commission by submitting their different offers. The client chooses the offer they like and transfers a payment to the bank account so the booking is confirmed. When the time comes, the photographer would fulfill his/her duty.
Sawerly team also work on adding other services in the near future, including printing and carving on different objects and selling cameras, photography gear and accessories through the website. Clients and website visitors will also be able to purchase photos by Sawerly’s photographers, as well as book complete photo sessions.
